Q. What is an MRI?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. An MRI is a safe method of providing highly detailed images of anatomy and pathology for medical diagnosis of many conditions, without the use of harmful x-rays.

Q. Why would I need an MRI?
MRI exams are used to diagnose internal conditions and to monitor the effects of certain treatments and medications. The MRI is an excellent way for your doctor to examine your brain, neck, spinal cord and soft tissues. MRI exams are used to detect:

• Brain abnormalities
• Plaques and blockages in the blood vessels
• Damage to (and infection of) bones and joints
• Chronic central nervous system disorders
• Brain tumors
• Strokes
• Functional disorders in organs including: liver, pancreas, kidney and spleen
• Degenerative disorders
• Breast abnormalities or tumors

Q. What if I have a larger build or can't tolerate closed spaces?

• The GE Excite MRI has a large patient opening for added comfort
• You are not completely closed in and can see out of either end of the machine
• Our staff will be in constant communication with you throughout the exam
• You can choose to receive a mild sedative to help you relax (ask your doctor for details)

Q. Do I need a doctor's referral?
Yes. In order for us to provide an MRI, we need an order from your physician with all necessary information.

Q. How do I pay for my MRI?
You can pay with your MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover or a personal check. Smart Choice also offers no-interest payment plans through Care Credit.

Q. How should I prepare for the exam?
You can eat normally and take your usual medications, unless otherwise instructed. Before the exam, you will be asked to remove jewelry, watches, hair ornaments and other metal objects. You will be given sweat pants and a t-shirt to wear for the exam, which you may take home. For more information please see Preparing for your Exam.

Q. What should I expect during the exam?
You will be asked to lie on the exam table and we will work with you to make you comfortable. You will hear a knocking sound during the exam due to the process. We can provide earplugs or turn on music to help you relax. You will be in constant communication with the technologist during the exam in case you have any questions or concerns.

Q. How soon will I receive results from my MRI?
We will provide the results to your physician as quickly as possible (usually in under 24 business hours).
