Central Pain Syndrome
My Doctor thinks I may have Central Pain Syndrome...
How will a Spinal MRI Help?
Central pain syndrome is a neurological condition caused by damage to or dysfunction of the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. The character of the pain associated with this syndrome differs widely among individuals, partly due to the wide variety of potential causes. An MRI examination may be helpful in evaluating the presence or progression of Central Pain Syndrome because MRI clearly demonstrates the soft tissues and structures of the spine.
If your doctor determines that an MRI would be helpful in determining the cause of your pain, a contrast media enhanced scan will likely be ordered. Your doctor and radiologists will work together to decide if contrast media is safe and warranted. Special blood tests may be required before your exam, especially if you have a history of diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or if you are over the age of 50. Smart Choice MRI understand the importance of a high-value service and an accurate diagnosis at this critical time.
Our radiologists at the Cleveland Clinic, recently rated one of top hospitals in the country, are committed to providing you and your doctor with the most accurate diagnosis available. In the case of a spinal MRI, that means only a dedicated Neuroradiologist (a radiologist that has undergone specialized training in the field of neurology and has passed a board examination in Neuroradiology) will interpret your exam. Comparison to any prior advanced imaging studies will be required to fully evaluate your condition. Click here to learn more about our radiology team.
