My Doctor Suspects Devic's Syndrome...
How will a Brain and Cervical Spine MRI Help?
Devic’s Syndrome, often referred to as Devic’s Neuromyelitis Optica, affects the optic nerves and spinal cord and often manifests as blindness. MRI examinations of the brain and cervical spine may be helpful in diagnosing the condition because MRI clearly demonstrates the soft tissue, nerves and structures of the spine and brain. Typically, a physician will look for diffuse abnormalities and extensive swelling in the cervical and thoracic cords and deep white matter lesions in the brain.
If your doctor determines that an MRI would be helpful in evaluating the symptoms of Devic’s Syndrome, a contrast media enhanced scan will likely be ordered. Your doctor and radiologists will work together to decide if contrast media is safe and warranted. Special blood tests may be required before your exam, especially if you have a history of diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or if you are over the age of 50. At Smart Choice MRI, we understand the importance of a high-value service and a timely, accurate diagnosis at this important time.
Our radiologists at the Cleveland Clinic, recently rated one of top hospitals in the country, are committed to providing you and your doctor with the most accurate diagnosis available. In the case of a brain or cervical spine MRI, that means only a dedicated Neuroradiologist (a radiologist that has undergone specialized training in the field of neurology and has passed a board examination in Neuroradiology) will interpret your exam. Comparison to any prior advanced imaging studies will be required to fully evaluate your condition. Click here to learn more about our radiology team.
