Epilepsy

My Doctor thinks I may have Epilepsy...

How will a Brain MRI Help to Diagnose the Issue?

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that can have a number of causes, some of which are linked to changes in the physical structures of the brain. A Brain MRI shows the physical structures of the brain in great detail and may be useful in determining the cause of seizures associated with epilepsy.  For instance, your physician may be looking for abnormal scarring due to brain injury that could be the source of the symptomatic seizures.

If your doctor determines that an MRI would be helpful in evaluating the symptoms of epilepsy, a contrast-enhanced study will likely be requested. Your doctor and radiologists will work together to decide if contrast media is safe and warranted. Special blood tests may be required before your exam, especially if you have a history of diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or if you are over the age of 50. Smart Choice MRI understands the importance of value driven service and a timely, accurate diagnosis at this critical time.

Our radiologists at the Cleveland Clinic, recently rated one of top hospitals in the country, are committed to providing you and your doctor with the most accurate diagnosis available. In the case of a brain MRI, that means only a dedicated Neuroradiologist (a radiologist that has undergone specialized training in the field of neurology and has passed a board examination in Neuroradiology) will interpret your exam. Comparison to any prior advanced imaging studies will be required to fully evaluate your condition. Click here to learn more about our radiology team.
